Mongolian stain. 2-year-old Asian girl in whom "by chance" recently this otherwise asymptomatic stain was noticed. Large, blurred, brown-grey, completely asymptomatic stain on buttocks and coccyx. The grey-brown (sometimes also bluish) colour is caused by dermal melanocytes (or melanin) whose black colour is changed by the milky glass effect of the overlying skin.

Mongolian spot. 6-year-old Turkish boy in whom these otherwise asymptomatic spots were noticed two months ago. Large, washed-out blue-grey spots over the coccyx, on the buttocks as well as on the lumbar region. The brown-black spot in the back over the lumbar spine is a melanocytic nevus (dark color due to epidermal pigment).
