Hemp seed oil is a fatty vegetable oil and, like other vegetable oils, consists of a homogeneous mixture of liquid triglycerides. It has a somewhat herbaceous aroma and a slightly nutty flavor. As the name suggests, hemp seed oil is extracted from the seeds of hemp(Cannabis sativa). The most important producing countries are France, China and Chile. Hemp oil is mostly used as an edible oil.
Unlike the plant's resin, hemp seeds only contain small amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Instead, there are higher concentrations of the non-psychotropic cannabidiol. This is why hemp seed oil has no psychoactive effect. In hemp seed oil, the concentrations of tetrahydrocannabinol vary from 0.3 to 19.73 μg/mL, the cannabidiol concentrations from 6.66 to 63.40 μg/mL (Jang E et al. 2020).
Note: Non-psychoactive hemp seed oil is often confused with other cannabinoid-containing oily hemp products, from which it must be distinguished. This also applies to essential hemp oil (obtained from distilled leaves and flowers) or hashish oil (oily resin extract with a high THC content). The latter are extremely psychotropic due to their high tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content.
