Fournier, alfred jean

(¤ 1832, † 1914) Dermatologist, active in Paris. Field(s) of research: Fournier's gangrene (acute gangrene of the male genitalia); Fournier was one of the leading European dermatologists at the turn of the century. He was a member of the "Big Five" - Ernest Henrie Besnier (1831-1909), Louis-Anne-Jean Brocq (1856-1928), Raymond Jacques Adrien Sabouraud (1864-1938) and Ferdinand Jean Darier (1856-1938). This group made the Paris School of Dermatology world-famous. Fournier's sign (radial perioral scarring in connatal syphilis). First description of the gangrene named after Fournier.
