The patient lying on his back bends both legs upwards in the hip joint and performs over 2 minutes either alternating dorsal and plantar reflections or circular movements in the ankle joint. Insufficient blood circulation leads to a paling of the skin mainly in the area of the soles of the feet, possibly also to ischemic pain in the calf muscles. After 2 minutes (or when the pain sets in) the legs hang down quickly. In a vascular healthy person, the feet redden within 5 seconds, the main veins are filled after 10 seconds at the latest. A time delay of reddening of the skin and filling of the veins, together with the intensity of reactive hyperemia, is a criterion for the severity of the arterial circulatory disorder.
