DefinitionThis section has been translated automatically.

Chemokine (see also CXCL4) formed by platelets that binds to glucosaminoglycans of endothelial cells.

General informationThis section has been translated automatically.

High affinity to heparin, after intravenous heparin administration PF4 may detach from the vessel wall and enter the circulation. The platelet factor 4/heparin complex represents the antigen in type II heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT II - D69.58). In previously sensitized patients, thrombocytes drop (>50% of the initial value) within a few hours after heparin administration. Clinically, this results in a "white clot syndrome" with the occurrence of life-threatening thromboses.
