Formerly: General term for inflammation of a vein. Today, the term phlebitis or thrombophlebitis (thrombophlebitis, superficial) is no longer used in specialist literature, but rather superficial thrombosis. This renaming is primarily intended to prevent the misinterpretation of the clinical picture that has unfortunately often arisen as a result of the term. This is not an "inflammation", but rather a thrombotic process, which should also be treated as a thrombosis.

Deep vein thrombosis must be distinguished from thrombotic changes in the deep venous system of the lower or upper extremities.

The term phlebitis, or rather superficial thrombosis, covers a number of etiologically and clinically very different clinical pictures and phenomena.

• Thrombophlebitis
• Varicophlebitis
• Thrombophlebitis, superficial ( phlebitis migrans/saltans; stranded phlebitis/ Mondor's disease).
