Rhubarb (Rheum) is a genus of plant in the knotweed family (Polygonaceae). Rhubarbaceae (there are about 60 species in the genus Rheum) are widespread in Asia. They grow as perennial herbaceous plants, forming stout underground rhizomes. The stem is erect, often hollow, the large stem leaves are wavy, toothed or lobed.

The dried roots, Rhei radix, are used phytotherapeutically.

Rheum palmatum or Rheum officinale is the parent plant of Rhei radix, which is a preparation of dried roots and rhizomes.

Monographs (HMPC, ESCOP, Ph.Eur.8, Commission E) exist for Rhei radix for the indication constipation.
