Herbaceous plant, rhapontic rhubarb, originally native to China, now also cultivated in Europe. The parent plant of Radix Rhei rhapontici. The dry extract from the roots of rhapontic rhubarb (Rheum rhaponticum) contains the hydroxystilbenes rhaponticin (fluoresces blue in UV light), rhapontigenin, deoxyrhapontigenin; deoxyrhaponticin as well as chrosophanic acid, oxalic acid and tannins (catechin).
