A plant belonging to the Polygonaceae (knotweed) family, up to 1.5 m tall and 1 m in diameter, relative of the vegetable rhubarb(Rheum rhabarbarum), see also rhubarb. Originally native to temperate zones in Asia. Long, richly branched inflorescences, small, greenish-white flowers.
The root, Radix rhei rhapontici, is of phytotherapeutic importance.
