Pumpkin seeds

Pumpkin plants are the only family of the order Cucurbitales, which is widespread with around 850 species.
Cucurbita pepo, the domestic garden pumpkin, is the parent plant of pumpkin seeds, Cucurbita semen.

Pumpkin seed extractsbelong to the group of phytopharmaceuticals in the natural healing group and are mainly used for urological diseases.

Pumpkin seed extracts contain: phytosterols (-sterols) in free or glycosidic form, tocopherol, lecithin, the tetracyclic triterpene cucurbitacin, minerals (selenium), fatty oil, linoleic acid, amino acids

Action: Inhibition of steroid 5alpha reductase; the extract also has antiphlogistic, antioxidant, anti-congestive effects.

Irritable bladder, micturition difficulties with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Remark: Crushing pumpkin seeds were formerly used together with castor oil or magnesium air as a tapeworm remedy.
