Large group of predominantly plant (secondary plant constituents) aromatic C6-C3 bodies. Phenylpropane derivatives include phenyl acrylic acids (derivatives of cinnamic acid), coumarin derivatives, phenylallyl derivatives, lignans, lignin and their derivatives. Numerous phenylcarboxylic acids occurring in plants are also derived from phenylpropane derivatives. All phenylpropane derivatives are formed via an identical synthesis pathway (shikimic acid-chorismic acid) and can be regarded as derivatives of phenylalanine and tyrosine.
