Definition

Naturally occurring flavonoids. They are derived from the 3-phenylchromone and differ from flavonoids in the position of the phenyl ring. They occur in higher plants, especially in Fabaceae, mostly as glycosides (sugar residues: glucose and rhamnose). To date, around 100 representatives of this substance group are known.

The isoflavones genistein (in Genista tinctoria) and daidzein in red clover and soy are known as phytoestrogens because of their estrogen-like effect.
