Forest sanicula

The forest sanicle is a herbaceous plant 20 to 60 cm tall with dark green leaves with serrated edges. Almost or completely leafless stems, hemispherical umbels with white, sometimes pink-colored flowers and 4-5 mm long brown-black, prickly fruits. The plant belongs to the umbellifer family (Apiaceae) and is found in the forests of Eurasia and North Africa. Flowers in May and June, fruits ripen in August and October.

The dried herb of the plant is used phytotherapeutically: Saniculae herba.

The forest sanicle grows as a perennial plant that reaches growth heights of between 20 and 60 cm. It has green basal leaves, but the stem is almost leafless. The forest sanicle blossoms in May and June and ripens in August and October. The umbel-like inflorescences are white, sometimes pink in colour.

Sanicula europaea is the parent plant of Saniculae herba.
