Diosgenin is a steroidal sapogenin that occurs in Disococera species (see yam below, see Rhizoma Dioscoreae villosae - here up to 10%) and also in the seeds of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum), in the rhizome(Asparagi rhizoma) of asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) and the white onion (Allium cepa). Structurally, it is the aglycone of dioscin.

Diosgenin is a steroid sapogenin that is mainly used in the industrial production of steroid compounds (oral contraceptives, sex hormones).
