Group of approx. 70 partly semi-synthetically modified alkaloids from various periwinkle species. Vinca alkaloids inhibit cell division in metaphase and block DNA and RNA synthesis. The mitosis inhibitors vinblastine and vincristine, for example, are widely used as cytostatic agents in the chemotherapy of tumor patients.
Vinca alkaloids are derived from various periwinkle species belonging to the dogbane family, including the Madagascar periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus, syn. Vinca rosea) and the small periwinkle (Vinca minor).
