The metabolome is the totality of small molecules that occur in a biological matrix. Metabolomics refers to the scientific study of chemical processes in which metabolites are involved. It is a "systematic study of the unique chemical fingerprints left by specific cellular processes", the study of their small molecule metabolite profiles.
