The HSPA8 gene (HSPA8 stands for: Heat Shock Protein Family A (Hsp70) Member 8 is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11q24.1. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
The HSPA8 gene encodes a member of the heat shock protein 70 family, which contains both heat-inducible and constitutively expressed members. The encoded protein, a chaperone, is also known as a cognate heat shock protein. It binds to nascent polypeptides to facilitate the correct folding of these proteins. It also functions as an ATPase in the disassembly of clathrin-coated vesicles during the transport of membrane components through the cell.
