Hiatus leucaemicus

Hiatus leucaemicus refers to the absence of intermediate developmental stages within the granulopoiesis (Herold 2020).

Hiatus leucaemicus is a typical sign of AML = acute myeloid leukemia (Herold 2020), but can also occur in acute lymphoblastic leukemia = ALL (Lohr 2002).

Histologically, mainly blasts, promyelocytes and only very few granulocytes are found both in the blood count and in the bone marrow (Siegenthaler 2002). The intermediate stages of myelopoiesis, however, such as promyelocytes, myelocytes, metamyelocytes and rod-shaped granulocytes are not detectable (Baum 2018).
