Carbachol is a quaternary ammonium compound with the molecular formula: C6H15ClN2O2 and a molar mass of 182.65 g/mol. Carbachol is a structural analogue of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Chemically it is an ester of choline with carbamic acid. Instead of an acetyl group, there is a carbamoyl group which gives the pharmaceutical an increased chemical stability compared to acetylcholine. Thus it can be cleaved much more difficult by acetylcholinesterase and has a longer half-life than acetylcholine, which means a longer persistence at the acetylcholine receptor of the muscarinic type (directly effective parasympathomimetic).
