Biperides

Biperiden is like atropine and scopolamine a muscarinic receptor antagonist with a tertiary nitrogen. Biperiden is a synthetically produced, predominantly centrally acting pharmaceutical with the molecular formula C21H29NO. Its peripheral effects are small compared to atropine. Biperiden binds competitively to peripheral and central muscarinic receptors (especially M1-receptors). In animal experiments Biperiden influences parkinson-like conditions (tremor, rigor) caused by centrally acting cholinergic drugs.

Biperiden is used among other things as an antiparkinsonian agent. Furthermore, the substance is used for extrapyramidal side effects such as body stiffness, gaze rigidity and akathisia, which can cause many antipsychotics above a certain dose.
