Antibiotic stewarship

The term stands for a bundle of measures to improve the quality of antibiotics prescriptions. Structured ABS activities are necessary in both the inpatient and outpatient sectors. The aim is to overcome the development of resistance as a global challenge. Structured measures based on guidelines of the professional societies can have a positive influence on the development of resistance in line with the reduced use of antibiotics.

The measures include:

• The strict indication of antibiotic therapy on the basis of guidelines
• The specific selection of the preparations
• The correct dosage and the correct application period
• An exact determination of the indication for antibiotic prophylaxis
