Wittels, wolf-dietrich

(¤ 1921, † 1979) The dermatologist Wittels was born in Vienna. 1948 Doctorate at the University of Vienna. Assistant at the 1st University Dermatology Clinic under Leopold Arzt and Josef Tappeiner. 1962 habilitation (topic: possibilities of large-area skin replacement in clinical and experimental view). 1975 Head of the department for burn diseases. Wittels was intensively involved in modernising the treatment of burn diseases and headed the so-called "waterbed ward" (the waterbed was a therapeutic device developed by Ferdinand v. Hebra for the treatment of large-area erosive skin diseases, such as pemphigus vulgaris or burns). Wittels died in 1979 at the age of 58 from a late complication of his war injury.
