Trichophyton verrucosum, cultivated on selective, modified (cycloheximide, chloramphenicol) cinnamon agar at 25 °C room temperature; culture surface: very slow growing (after 5 weeks 1-2 cm ø at room temperature; growth stimulation at 35-37 °C), velvety, flat, verrucous or cerebriform, solid colonies with beige-yellow, partly whitish surface.
Trichophyton verrucosum. underside of the culture: whitish or yellowish colour with waxy aspect (slightly darker than the surface). centrally increasing pithiness by raising the air mycelium.
Trichophyton verrucosum. microscopy of the culture: typical for this species are the numerous arthrospores in a chain-like arrangement with right-angled side branches. in places decay of the arthrospores. long, gnarled, branched, terminally thickened hyphae.chlamydospores are thick-walled, mostly terminally but also intercalary arranged. microconidia (growth is promoted with inositol and thiamine) are rare: mostly pyriform or pointed shaped and arranged laterally to the hyphae.macroconidia are small, occur very rarely, with smooth and thin-walled structure and 3-8 chambers.
