Trichophyton rubrum. microscopy of culture: long, thin hyphae, in contrast to T. interdigitale no spiral hyphae. microconidia typically acladium-shaped (ears of corn), arranged staggered at the hyphae; very rare occurrence of chlamydospores; macroconidia very rare (mostly absent), long and smooth-walled sausage to cigar-shaped, strongly septated, rounded at the poles, 3-8 chambers.
Trichophyton rubrum. culture top: cultivation on selective, modified (cycloheximide, chloramphenicol) cinnamon agar at 25 °C. Colonies growing relatively fast to moderately (after about 14 days mycelium of 1 cm ø) with initially fluffy to cotton-like and later velvety surface. initially central wool button ("cotton ball") with flat edge. later yellow-reddish shades and radial texture of the colony. pigment may also be missing, then confusion with T. interdigital macroscopically possible.
Trichophyton rubrum. underside of the plant: less intense yellow to dark reddish-brown colour in the periphery; pigment may be missing in the centre.
