Transdermal therapeutic systems

The trasndermal application of Pharmka in the form of ointments, creams or gels serves primarily for local therapy. Only very lipophilic pharmaceuticals are absorbed and enter directly into the systemic circulation without pre-systemic elimination. This form of resorption has led to the development of transdermal therapeutic systems which release lipophilic drugs at a constant rate and cause them to be absorbed transdermally.

TTS play a role as patch formulations. They have proved their worth as nicotine patches in smoking cessation, as pain plasters in the treatment of chronic pain (opiodanalges such as fentanyl and buprenorphine), in the treatment of climacteric complaints with oestrogens and in the treatment of coronary circulation disorders with glycerol nitrate.
