(¤ 1855 -1943) Dermatologist. Born in Wiener Neustadt, he worked in Leipzig and Vienna. He received his dermatological training in Vienna with F.v. Hebra and M. Kaposi. In 1896 he was appointed associate professor for syphilis and skin diseases and successor of Julius Caspary at the medical faculty in Leipzig. This was connected with his function as "senior physician" at the newly founded department for syphilitic and skin diseases at the Jakobshospital. In 1901 he was appointed full honorary professor for dermatology and syphilidology at the University of Vienna. Here he succeeded his teacher M. Kaposi. Riehl headed this clinic for 24 years. Riehl's name is primarily associated with the famous Vienna School of Dermatology, represented by Ferdinand v. Hebra and Moritz Kaposi. In the scientific field Riehl enriched dermatology with numerous pathological-anatomical as well as clinical works. Later he also turned to serological and radiological research in dermatology. Important publications: Riehl's melanosis (see below: Melanodermatitis toxica). 1886 first description of tuberculosis cutis verrucosa and 1917 first description of the pigment melanosis named after Riehl.
