The polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase, also abbreviated as GalNac-T, is an enzyme that catalyses the chemical reaction UDP-N-acetyl-D-galactosamine + polypeptides = UDP + N-acetyl-D-galactosaminyl polypeptides. The enzyme belongs to the family of glycosyltransferases, especially the hexosyltransferases. It requires as cofactors: magnesium and calcium.
The substrates of the polypeptides N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase are UDP-N-acetyl-D-galactosamines and polypeptides; its two reaction products are UDP and N-acetyl-D-galactosaminyl polypeptides. GalNacT is expressed in normal brain tissue and in a number of malignancies, including colon and gastric cancer, adult T-cell leukemia cells and neuroblastoma.
