The invisible epithelium that lies dorsally on the nail plate in the nail pocket is called eponychium. From this a fine, non-sensitive, horny cuticle moves forward onto the nail plate, which closes the nail pocket dorsally and thus takes over an important (biological) function - the cuticle or perionychium - (also called perionyx). Widening, thickening and vasculasrisation of the cuticle is a typical clinical phenomenon in systemic scleroderma and dermatomyositis.
