Metabolic syndrome

Syndrome characterized by 4 factors:

• abdominal obesity
• arterial hypertension
• dyslipidemia
• insulin resistance.

The disease usually develops as a result of a lifestyle characterized by permanent overeating and lack of physical activity. It affects a high proportion of the population living in industrialised countries.

According to the 1998 WHO criteria, metabolic syndrome is also present when the following risk factors are present:

• diabetes mellitus
• impaired glucose tolerance
• pathological fasting blood glucose or insulin resistance
• and 2 of the following parameters:
• Arterial hypertension
• Dyslipidemia
• Visceral obesity (waist-to-hip ratio > 0.9 (m) or > 0.85 (w) and/or a BMI > 30 kg/sqm).
