Progressive loss of subcutaneous fatty tissue, usually occurring in the wake of infectious diseases, initially localised and later possibly generalised. The disease can also occur as a precursor of lipatrophic, insulin-resistant diabetes after a few years of disease progression. In our opinion synonymous with Lawrence syndrome as acquired generalized lipodystrophy.

Lipodystrophia generalisata acquisita is currently moving increasingly into the clinical focus as it occurs frequently in HIV-infected patients under HAART.
