Hydroxyphenoxy-propionic acid

Phenolic carboxylic acid which, when applied topically, is intended to lighten the skin. In a small clinical study (n=82) a hydroxyphenoxy-propionic acid formulation was
comparedwith
a 4% hydroquinone cream. The clinical effect was comparable in this study. In melanoma cell cultures hydroxyphenoxy propionic acid inhibits melanone production by inhibiting the melanosome transfer to the keratinocytes.

In the trade, hydroxyphenoxy-propionic acid formulations are advertised luridly against "age spots". Due to their chemical composition they should only be used after consultation with a dermatologist.
