Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are aromatic compounds with condensed ring systems. They are formed e.g. by incomplete combustion of organic materials such as wood, coal, tobacco, petrol etc. PAHs usually have a penetrating odour. Some representatives of PAHs are oncogenic. The best known PAH relevant to health is benzpyrene. Other representatives are anthracene and penanthrene. PAHs can be absorbed through the respiratory tract, food and also through the skin.
