Gudden, bernhard von

(¤ 1824, † 1886) Psychiatrist. Gudden was the son of a landowner and brewer. He went to school in Kleve (Lower Rhine) and from 1844 studied medicine in Bonn, Berlin and Halle. In 1848 doctorate in Halle. 1849-55 assistant at the psychiatric institutions of Siegburg and Illenau (Prussia), during this time he also wrote works on parasitoses of the skin. Later v. Gudden became director of the mental hospital Werneck (Bavaria). In 1869 he became professor of psychiatry at the University of Zurich. 1872 appointment to the University of Munich. v. Gudden drowned in Lake Starnberg with Ludwig II of Bavaria, whom he treated psychiatrically.
