Schematic structure of a cutaneous granuloma(scheme varies according to E.v. Stebut) The mature granuloma consists mainly of M1-macrophages surrounded by a wall of CD4+ Th1-lymphocytes, CD8+ Tc1-lymphocytes and regulatory T-cells (Treg).
Schematic structure of a cutaneous granuloma(scheme varies according to E.v. Stebut) The late granuloma consists mainly of M2-macrophages surrounded by a wall of Th2-lymphocytes and regulatory T-cells (Treg).
Via the growth factors M-CSF and GM-CSF, non-activated M-CSF and GM-CSF macrophages are formed. activation with IFNγ and LPS leads to inflammatory M1 macrophages with cytotoxic properties. activation with IL-4 and IL-10 leads to M2 macrophages. GM1 macrophages are formed by activation from GM-CSF macrophages.
