Distichiasis H02.0

Distichiasis, from Greek. di = two, trixos = row, row) denotes a double row of eyelashes arranged along the edges of the eyelids. The eyelashes grow out of the Meibomian glands located at the edge of the eyelid. The orientation of the eyelashes can turn towards the eyeball. This leads to the phenomenon of trichiasis, a pathological chafing or rubbing of individual lashes or an entire row of lashes.

Acquired in chronic eyelid inflammation. Hereditary: Distichiasis is a leading symptom in the hereditary distichiasis-lymphedema syndrome (MIM 154300).

The disease can occur on both the upper and lower eyelid; it can affect one or both eyes.
