Pan B-lymphocyte marker (often more sensitive than CD20); B-cell lymphomas and leukemias.
CD79a, is a B cell receptor surface protein involved in the humoral immune response. CD79a is a cell type marker of B cells as well as their progenitor cells and is produced by B cells. It binds to CD79b. CD79a is necessary for cell differentiation of pro-B cells and pre-B cells.
CD79a is often used in combination with CD20 as a B cell marker for B cell lymphomas. Certain gene defects of CD79a are associated with a form of agammaglobulinemia.
