The CD4 molecule binds to MHC class II molecules and is a co-receptor for MHC class II antigen-induced activation. On thymocytes often co-expressed with CD8. CD4+ lymphocytes are involved in the synthesis of immunoglobulins by B cells. CD4 is a receptor for gp120 (envelope protein of HIV-1).
