The A-contact refers to contacts of the buccal cusps of the upper and lower jaw. The cusps of the upper jaw tooth touch the cusp of the lower jaw tooth. The A-contact belongs to the so called ABC-contacts which means the localization of antagonist contacts in the sense of a stable occlusion in the posterior tooth area, because the antagonist is the opposite tooth in the jawbone.

During the act of chewing or chewing process, the cusps engage in the corresponding dimples of the opposing molars, which are responsible for grinding up the food in the masticatory system. In order to avoid interfering contacts in the dentition, the teeth should be in contact with each other in a coordinated way for a stable bite in the area of the grinders and only touch each other at certain ABC contact points.
