Taurine (from "tauros" Greek for "bull"), the 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid is a colorless and odorless organic acid with the molecular formula C2H7NO3S. Taurine has a sulphonic acid group and another amino group. The amino sulfonic acid is metabolically formed as an oxidation product of the amino acids cysteine. Taurine is present in the mammalian bile, together with cholic acid, as taurocholic acid.

Salts and esters of taurine are called taurates.
