Smilax aristolochiaefolia extract (inci)

Smilax aristolochiaefolia extract, the root extract of Smilax aristolochiaefolia (Smilax regelii), the sarsaparilla (also known as veracruz sarsparilla), a climbing plant of the sarsaparilla family (Smilacaceae) native to Mexico and Central America.

Steroid saponins (2-5%); parallin and sarsaponin, the phytosterols sitosterol and stigmasterol, and essential oils.

Naturopathy: Root extracts from the plant (Sarsaparillae radix) are widely used for various skin diseases and to increase the synthesis of urine and sweat. There is a negative monograph on Sarsaparillae radix from the Commission E.

Nutrition: Root extracts are used in flavoured drinks, dairy desserts, bakery products and sweets.

Cosmetics: Smilax aristolochiaefolia extract is used in cosmetic formulations. The extract has a skin caring effect.
