PPG is the acronym for "polypropylene glycol", the polymer of propylene glycol (1,2-propanediol), a dihydric alcohol. The number after "PPG" indicates the average number of propylene glycol molecular units, for "PPG-5" 5 propylene glycol molecular units. "pareth-6" denotes a PEG ether of an alkyl alcohol. The numbers in front, here "9-15" indicate the number of linearly arranged carbon molecules (C) of the alkyl alcohols. The number 6 at "pareth-6" indicates the average number of molecular units "-CH2-CH2-O-".

PPG-5 C9-15 pareth-5 is used in cosmetic formulations. The mixture of substances acts as an emulsifier (surface-active substance which is used in cosmetic formulations as an additive to combine 2 immiscible liquids - e.g. oil and water - to form an emulsion).
