Piperonal is a pleasant smelling (vanilla and almond smell), mainly vegetable benzaldehyde derivative. Piperonal is found in the essential oils of flower oils of meadowsweet and common robinia.

Piperonal is hardly soluble in water, but is highly soluble in ethanol and ether. Piperonal turns dark in light. The substance is used in cosmetic formulations (soaps and detergents) as a flavouring agent.
