Ononis arvensis extract is the root extract of the "thorny bark" Ononis spinosa (Wild Liquerice; Common Restharrow). Ononis spinosa (Cammock; Petty whin; Thorny restharrow) is a plant genus in the subfamily of papilionaceous plants (Faboideae), which belongs to the family of legumes (Fabaceae).

The root extract (see also under Hauhechel) is used in cosmetic formulations. The root extract has a calming effect (relieves discomfort on the skin and scalp) and an antiseborrhoeic effect (helps to inhibit sebum production).
