Lauryl sultaine (inci)

"Lauryl" refers to lauryl alcohol (1-dodecanol) as the alcoholic component. "Sultaines" denotes a group of organic compounds which are chemically to be understood as sulfobetaines (see betaines below). Due to their molecular structure, sulfobetaines carry a positive and a negative charge at the same time.

Lauryl sultaine is used in cosmetic formulations. The substance acts as antistatic agent (reduces static charges by neutralizing the electric charge on the surface of e.g. hair), surfactant (washing-active substance) and foaming agent (increases the foaming and improves volume, structure and durability of the foam).
