Erythrulose is a natural sugar, a ketotetrose (consists of 4 C-atoms) that occurs naturally in numerous plants and in various lichen species (see also dihydroxyacetone a triose).

Erythrulose is a substance that is used in cosmetic products as a self-tanning agent. Erythrulose can be easily incorporated into creams, lotions or sprays by 1.5 to 3 %.

With erythrulose a skin coloration is achieved which lasts about 14 days. The tanning effect is delayed, after 2 to 3 days. The general precautions to be observed with self-tanning products (see below self-tanning agents) also apply to Erythrulose.
