Bht (inci)

Acronym for butyl hydroxtoluene (CAS No.: 128-37-0) - acts as an antioxidant, which is used in cosmetic preparations as an antioxidant (0.01-0.02%) for oils and fats (inhibits among other things the rancidity of ingredients). The substance is insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether, acetone, fatty oils. Butylhydroxtoluene is often used in combination with butylhydroxyanisole and other synergistically active substances (citric acid, ascorbyl palmitate etc.).

Compared to many other phenol derivatives, the substance has only a low sensitizing potential. Isolated contact allergic reactions have been described.
