Acronym for "skin-associated lymphoid tissue", also known as "skin-associated lymphoid tissue", an immune network in which various cell systems have taken on the complex task of maintaining or restoring the integrity of the skin. The central task of SALT is the recognition, evaluation and processing of pathogen components that have entered the skin exogenously and/or endogenously. T cells play a central role in the immunological network of the skin. Thus, 2x1010T cells are found in the human skin, about twice as many as in the peripheral blood stream.
