Montanic acid, also known as n-octacosanoic acid, is a saturated higher fatty acid (carboxylic acid). Its salts and esters are called "montanoates". Montanoic acid and its numerous ester compounds are contained in montan wax and are produced by extraction from lignite.

The esters of montanic acid were declared as food additive E 912 until 1. 10. 2014. Since then esters of montanic acid are no longer permitted as food additives.
