Quaternary (lat. quaternarius = consisting of four) ammonium compounds, also called QAV or quats, are organic ammonium compounds in which all four valences of a nitrogen atom are organically bound. They are therefore ionic compounds. Quaternary trimethylammonium salt from wheat starch hydrolysate is formed in a reaction of hydroxypropyltrimethylamine and hydrolysed wheat starch.

Quaternary trimethylammonium salt from wheat starch hydrolysate is used in cosmetic products, hair shampoos and hair conditioners (also in body care products). Reduces the electrostatic charges of the hair shafts, has a conditioning effect so that the hair becomes softer and more supple. It is easier to comb and shines more.
