Group of leukotrienes (LTC4, LTD4, LTE4) formed by phagocytes, basophil and eosinophil granulocytes and mast cells. LTC4 is formed via LTA4 by enzymatic coupling with glutathione. LTD4 is formed by cleavage of the gamma-glutamyl from the glutathione part of the LTC4 molecule by gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase. Glycine is then removed by a dipeptidase leading to LTE4. The main excretion product of the cysteinyl-LT metabolism is LTE4 which is mainly excreted by the bile.
